The Global Training Session (GTS), conducted virtually from April 22 to 25, 2021, brought together 85 participants from 65 countries, representing the five regions of Africa, Asia, Oceania (Australia), Europe, and Latin America. Focused on the theme “Youth Engaging in Humanitarian Action and Sustainable Development,” the GTS reflected on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on social and economic orders, evaluated progress on sustainable development, and advocated for youth involvement in policy and decision-making. Critical issues such as health, education, online violence, innovation, inequalities, climate change, peace, security, and partnership were addressed in the context of the pandemic.
The event resulted in a new global campaign theme, ‘Holistic eduACTion for a better world,‘ adopted by the International Committee to guide the Movement’s mission and actions from 2021 to 2024. Despite the crisis, opportunities for solidarity, humanity, technological innovation, and a renewed appreciation for simple pleasures were recognized. The International Young Catholic Students (IYCS) has consistently empowered young people with holistic education, environmental care, and peacebuilding through training and campaigns at various levels.
Our focus has been on enhancing young people’s capacity in transformative leadership, personal development, and advocacy, enabling them to apply new skills and knowledge through action. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to IYCS’ mission, acknowledging its significant influence on young people and urging the Secretariat to strengthen members’ capacity in collaboration, evangelization, and networking. The GTS also called on young Catholic students to engage in meaningful humanitarian action during the COVID-19 pandemic and contribute positively to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
