Text Box: OBJECTIVES: IYCS has always aimed to evangelise and transform the student milieu (both secondary and tertiary), with a commitment to liberation at a global level, and an option for the poor. We understand ourselves as the presence of the Church in and at the service of the student milieu. The movement has also always sought to overcome the dualism between faith and life, and hence it emphasises a pedagogy (an educative methodology) based on transforming action, which always starts from a deep analysis and faith reflection on the reality. It is therefore primarily organised in small groups which use the “see-judge-act” method, with a priority of being led by the students themselves.

STRENGTH: The movement is present in 85 countries (with 63 member movements, and 22 collaborator movements) in 7 regions encompassing all the continents.

FOCUS: Our movements are engaged in diverse issues (Educational, Social, Cultural, Ecological, Economic, Political and Spiritual) according to their local experience or engagements and the capacity of the student leadership. Despite the difficult economic, social and political conditions that exist today for students everywhere, and that negatively affect our movement, our engagement continues to provide a dynamic formation to millions of students, many of whom are becoming key actors in all sectors of society and the Church with a spirituality of action, integral development, and global solidarity. At the international level, the IYCS is currently reinforcing this diversity of experience and engagement by pooling resources in promoting IYCS Global Campaign ‘Fight Poverty-Build Peace’ among the movements, in the following ways:

1.   To continue the formation and strengthening of Regional Coordinations and National Movements, especially the weaker Coordinations and movements through visitations and programs.
2.   To strengthen communication and networking within the movement, as well as with other like minded movements and partners.
3.    To deepen our relationship with the Holy See, other ICO’s, and the UN bodies (ECOSOC, CHR, and UNESCO), and to promote and facilitate the active involvement and participation of National Movements and Regional Coordinations in representational work at a local, national, regional & International level.
4.    To transmit among students the importance of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and to integrate it into our formation programmes.
5.   To organise a yearly International Coordination Meeting (ICM) with a focus on developing skills and capacity among the Regional Coordination Team members.

Moreover, IYCS International Coordination is focusing on the following SHORT TERM objectives:
  a)  To extend our role of evangelising the student milieu through expressing solidarity and promoting a spirituality of action in war-affected countries and geographically and politically isolated countries.
b) To engage with, and encourage participation in global events like World Social Forum and World Youth Day to experience and share solidarity.
c)  To develop global projects for a just world, with a focus on issues like AIDS, Education for Peace, Ecumenism and Inter Religious Dialogue, and other Youth and Teenage related problems.
d) To develop and implement concrete plans for the Celebration in 2006 of 60 years of Internationality of the IYCS Movement world wide.
e) To host a World Council in 2007 which would mark the gathering of students from all countries for the first time since 1991.
